Neil L. Reed is excited to join the Â鶹AV Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music as Assistant Professor of Music Education. He recently completed his PhD in Music Education at the University of Missouri, where he served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School of Music.

At the University of Missouri, Dr. Reed was Instructor of Record for several undergraduate courses, including Basic Conducting and Score Reading, Rehearsal Clinic: Band Conducting I, and Symposium in Instrumental Music. He also co-directed the 120-member University Band, served as a graduate teaching assistant with the 350-member Marching Mizzou, and was Assistant Director of the Mini Mizzou Volleyball and Men’s Basketball Bands. In addition, he guest-conducted all three MU Concert Bands. His primary research mentors were Brian A. Silvey and Wendy L. Sims, and he was a nominee for the Donald K. Anderson Graduate Teaching Assistant Award from the University of Missouri School of Music.

Reed brings ten years of public-school teaching experience in the Texas Panhandle, having served in TMEA Region 1 as Assistant Director of Bands at Canadian ISD, Dumas ISD, and Wellington ISD. During his public-school career, his ensembles earned multiple UIL Sweepstakes awards and other performance recognitions.

He earned a Master of Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado under the guidance of research advisor Mark Montemayor, where he also performed on bassoon as his secondary instrument. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of New Mexico, where he studied trombone, served as drum major of the UNM Spirit Marching Band, and received the Spirit of New Mexico Award in 2009.

A native of Farmington, New Mexico, Reed also holds the rank of Warrant Officer 1 (WO1) in the Army National Guard. He was recently appointed Executive Officer (XO) of the 44th Army Band in Albuquerque, where he has served for more than twenty years as a soldier musician.

Reed is a member of NAfME, TMEA, TBA, and Kappa Kappa Psi, and is a recipient of the John Philip Sousa Band Award. He is excited to return to the Lone Star State and to guide and mentor the next generation of Texas music educators.

Reed resides in Beaumont with his wife, Abby, and their two cats, Chai and Friendly.
