BS Leadership Studies Program Goals

  • Increase the number of Franklin Covey Certificates awarded to Leadership Studies majors.
  • Create Leadership Portfolios for Personal and Professional Presentation.
  • Optimize Networking Opportunities and Experiences.
  • Develop Leadership Studies as a Field of Study.

Learning Goals of Leadership Studies Program

  • Learn to adapt, and grow principle-centered leadership skills by engaging directly with peers, challenges, and real-world scenarios
  • Cultivate and refine lifelong habits to help navigate complex individual, team, and organizational challenges
  • Learn and practice servant leadership and coaching through classroom, campus, and community engagement

Adaptation and Growth of Principle-Centered Leadership Skills

Integrating a "teach to learn" approach involves creating a framework where students enhance their understanding of a subject by teaching it to others. The following two elements of the course are required:

  • Students rotate roles where each act as both teacher and student, teaching segments of the course content. Usually done at the end of a learning module.
  • LeaderU or other discussion responses with reflection and discussion used for students to relate  their own personal experiences to Leadership situations.

Assessment of Adaptation and Growth of principle-centered leadership skills

  • Pass Rate on 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Knowledge Certification Exam covering leadership knowledge, but with emphasis on application (MGMT 3311).
  • Written Mission Statement from Leadership Portfolio (MGMT 3311).

Lifelong Habits

Students practice and develop their lifelong habits through various interactive and experiential activities. The following two elements of the course are required:

  • Practical instructor led sessions on leadership skills with self-assessment and reflective essays on leadership content
  • Franklin/Covey Certificate Knowledge Exam

Assessment of Leadership Capabilities

  • Written Brand Statement in Leadership Portfolio (LEAD 4310 Personal Brand Reputation and Trust).
  • Pass Rate on Speed of Trust Knowledge Certification Exams covering leadership knowledge, but with emphasis on application (LEAD 4320 Project Leadership).

Servant Leadership and Coaching

A strategic approach that ensures students engage directly in the classroom, on campus and in the local community. A list or description of organizations students will work with, including their missions and contact information should be provided. One of the two elements below is required.

  • A “teach to learn” or implementation of a leadership system such as 4DX may be used to guide the organization. A detailed schedule for when students are expected to be in the community.
  • Invitations to leaders from different sectors to share insights and experiences in class and/or a student field trip to community site relevant to course topics.

Assessment of Servant Leadership

  • Total score of all documents In Leadership Portfolio.
  • Pass Rate on Four Essential Roles Knowledge Exam. Resume and Reference List (AASC 3301 Career and Communication Strategies).
